I believe your health is your number one asset and at 67, I have the good fortune to be in very good health. My first triathlon A picture of me in 1996 when I was 52 and weighed 260 pounds.I have been taking the USANA Health Sciences brand of nutritional supplements since 1995. The picture on the right is of me in 1996 when I was 52 and weighed 260 pounds. Read the science behind the method I used to lose my weight. Click Here.

I am also very fortunate to live in a small town that has a new YMCA a few blocks from my home. One of my friends I workout with introduced me to the sport of triathlon and we competed in a team sprint triathlon in early May, 2010, one friend did the swim, I rode the bike and another friend did the run. Now I must say I’m hooked.

In August of 2010, I competed in my first individual sprint triathlon where I did all three events. My First Swim FinishMy swim was horrible since I’m just learning to swim and I’m fearful of putting my head in the water. I was the last one out of the water. I could not swim the freestyle and had to do the basic breast stroke and the basic back stroke the entire distance. Since Jan 2011 I have been learning the Total Immersion method of swimming and I am making progress, slowly.

My friends completed the 750 meter swim in 14 to 18 minutes. Me? Only 46 minutes and 57 seconds. lol As I said, I am making progress. I can now swim, really swim the freestyle the Total Immersion way, for 25 yards. After all the drills I have been doing, I’m slowly training my center nervous system the proper technique. Which is what Terry Laughlin, founder and head coach of Total Immersion Swimming, teaches. He says to never practice struggle and that is what I had been doing.

Finishing the Bike LegMy bike ride was OK, since it is my strong event. But my run was another story. Most people can walk faster than I ran. For the 5K course, I believe my time for each mile was about 18 minutes. One day I was training with my friends and ever one was done except me. I still had one mile to go in a 3 mile run. Galen came looking for me in his car. HeFinishing my first sprint triathlon rolled his window down and said, “Get in” in what sounded like a stern voice.  I thought, “oh no, I am kicked off the team”.  I respond back and said, “I was going to run rest of the way”.  He yelled back, “That’s not running”.  That made me laugh.

Well, my running has improved somewhat.  I’m still slow, but I’m running 13 minute miles now.  I know some people would call that a fast walk. lol Below is a group picture of my triathlete friends I train with. As painful as it was to complete the triathlon, I highly recommend triathlons to everyone regardless of your age or physical abilities. It is a fun, healthy sport and you are truly only competing against yourself.
