My First Triathlon for the 2011 Season
The Shawnee Mission Triathlon on the 10th of July will be my first triathlon for the 2011 season. I think I’m coming to my senses regarding my swimming skills. It is obvious to me that I need much more practice before I will be able to compete in an Ironman, full or half. I had signed up for the full Ironman in The Woodlands, Texas on May 21st, 2011 and for the Kansas 70.3 on the 12th of June, 2011. I postponed both of those events until next year.
My swimming has improved and it will continue to improve in the coming days. I’m looking forward to competing in the Shawnee Mission Sprint Triathlon where I was dreading the thought of the 2.4 mile swim considering the current level of my swimming skills. In January 2011, I was unable to swim 25 yards freestyle, so I purchased a self-coached swimming program from Total Immersion Swimming and started my journey to becoming a truly competent triathlon swimmer. I highly recommend this course to every person who dreams of becoming a triathlete. To learn more watch this video. click here.
Below is the information on the Shawnee Mission Sprint Triathlon. There is a long course, but I’m only doing the short course.

Shawnee Mission Triathlon: Closed Course With Two Courses
The Shawnee Mission Triathlon is a great competitive and one of Johnson County’s premier racing event. This closed course event offers both a Short Course (Sprint Distance) and a Long Course (International Distance) for a wide range of national athletic racing talent. Both courses are routed on the Mill Creek Streamway which adjoins Shawnee Mission Park. ChampionChip timing-system will be used with aid stations at transition and at every mile on the run.
The Short Course is a .31 mile (500 meter) swim, 9 mile bike, and a 2.4 mile run (see maps for course layout). The swim is an out and back course with a standing water start. The bike course is 2 laps of the main park road providing a rolling venue.
