My First Triathlon for the 2011 Season

The Shawnee Mission Triathlon on the 10th of July will be my first triathlon for the 2011 season. I think I’m coming to my senses regarding my swimming skills. It is obvious to me that I need much more practice before I will be able to compete in an Ironman, full or half. I had signed up for the full Ironman in The Woodlands, Texas on May 21st, 2011 and for the Kansas 70.3 on the 12th of June, 2011. I postponed both of those events until next year.

My swimming has improved and it will continue to improve in the coming days. I’m looking forward to competing in the Shawnee Mission Sprint Triathlon where I was dreading the thought of the 2.4 mile swim considering the current level of my swimming skills. In January 2011, I was unable to swim 25 yards freestyle, so I purchased a self-coached swimming program from Total Immersion Swimming and started my journey to becoming a truly competent triathlon swimmer. I highly recommend this course to every person who dreams of becoming a triathlete. To learn more watch this video. click here.

Below is the information on the Shawnee Mission Sprint Triathlon. There is a long course, but I’m only doing the short course.

The Shawnee Mission Triathlon is a great competitive and one of Johnson County’s premier racing event. This closed course event offers both a Short Course (Sprint Distance) and a Long Course (International Distance) for a wide range of national athletic racing talent. Both courses are routed on the Mill Creek Streamway which adjoins Shawnee Mission Park. ChampionChip timing-system will be used with aid stations at transition and at every mile on the run.

The Short Course is a .31 mile (500 meter) swim, 9 mile bike, and a 2.4 mile run (see maps for course layout). The swim is an out and back course with a standing water start. The bike course is 2 laps of the main park road providing a rolling venue.

Solving the Speed Problem in Swimming

The one thing every triathlete wants to do is swim faster. Terry Laughlin, founder and owner of Total Immersion Swimming, gives a presentation on how he believes any triathlete can swim faster. This video is worth watching. There were nine short videos and I joined the 9 together creating one 31 minute video. Enjoy and I hope Terry’s presentation is a benefit to you. I highly recommend the full Total Immersion Swim Course. You can learn more about it at Total Immersion Swimming.

Our New Bike Jersey

Rusty FolsomRusty Folsom, one of the members of the Miami County Triathlon Club, designed and filled the order for our new bike jersey.  I think he did a great job.  Thanks Rusty.  Currently we have 10 members in our club.

New Biking Jersey

Here is a group picture of some of our members. This picture was taken on the 28th of Aug. 2010 after I completed my first triathlon. I was the last one out of the water on the swim and I think I was very close to the last person to finish the triathlon.

Wear Gloves – The Healthy Home

As triathletes, we are constantly working on being as healthy as possible considering our own personal circumstances.  In my triathlon training I have found there is more to being healthy than working out and eating right, a lot more. The Health Home

I found a book that will help you to be healthy in ways you may not have thought of.  I know that was true for me. I learned that we poison our children and pets just to kill a fly. Even if you don’t have a prescription, we get a dose of antibiotics ever day.  Did you know that we would need a Hazmat suit to clean up a broken energy-efficient CFL light bulb.  These are some of the things you will learn when you read the book.

The name of the book is The Healthy Home by Dr. Myron Wentz & Dave Wentz with Donna K. Wallace.  Here is what Dr. Christianne Northrup, a New York Times bestselling author, has to say about it.  “The Healthy Home is full of practical and accessible health advice that will help you get a good night’s sleep, choose the right household cleaners, and figure out what products to avoid”.

The Healthy Home has been on the New York Besting Selling List for several weeks.  You can purchase The Healthy Home on Amazon.com or any large book store. Health, Mind & Body Books)

I think you will enjoy the below video.

Kathy Kaehler, celebrity fitness trainer and USANA spokesperson, attends The Healthy Home book tour event in New York City on April 11, 2011. She gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the presentation and encourages you to attend an event yourself! For the complete tour schedule, please visit http://myhealthyhome.com.

NEWSWIRE)–June 24, 2010

Today, World Triathlon Corporation announces the addition of Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas to its worldwide Ironman Series. Taking place in The Woodlands, located just north of downtown Houston, the event is scheduled for May 21, 2011. The inaugural race will enhance the current Ironman calendar, which consists of 25 events around the world in locations such as Australia, China, Brazil and Germany.

“Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas will be a phenomenal race,” said Steve Meckfessel, Ironman’s Chief Operations Officer. “The community’s spirit, unique amenities and accessibility make The Woodlands a perfect destination for our athletes and spectators. We’re truly excited about adding this event to the 2011 Ironman schedule.”

An Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a 26.2-mile run, and athletes must complete the three disciplines in succession within a 17-hour time frame. Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas will offer 65 coveted slots to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship, taking place on Oct. 8 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Additionally, there will be a prize purse of $100,000 for distribution among the top professional male and female finishers.

“We are very pleased that World Triathlon Corporation has selected The Woodlands for its Ironman Texas event,” said Bruce Tough, Chairman of the Board of The Woodlands Township. “This world-class event garners major international exposure and is great for the recognition of The Woodlands.”

Nick Wolda, President of the Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau, added, “The Woodlands and South Montgomery County are quickly becoming household names in competitive sports events, from the world-class brand of Ironman to NCAA, college and high school championships. With people from all over the world living and visiting The Woodlands, Ironman Texas is a perfect match for our international community.”

Participants will begin with a swim in Lake Woodlands, entering the water at Northshore Park and finishing at Town Green Park, which will serve as the transition area. Athletes will then head out on the bike course that will take them west through The Woodlands before heading north to the scenic, rolling farmland of east Texas. The final portion of the race is a marathon course entirely within The Woodlands that concludes with a spectacular finish on Market Street.

“This event will showcase the huge variety of shopping, dining, entertainment and hospitality we have in The Woodlands, and will be very beneficial for the residents and businesses of The Woodlands,” said Nelda Luce Blair, Chairman of the Board, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider serving greater Houston, will serve as title sponsor of the event.

A longtime resident of The Woodlands, Steve Sanders, CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, welcomed the announcement for multiple reasons.

“My pride that The Woodlands was selected for this race is matched only by my pride in Memorial Hermann’s buy cheap Deltasone online outstanding sports medicine program. This is a win-win for our community and for Memorial Hermann.”

As a major player in the athletic arena, the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute was actively looking to diversify its programs and outreach through a meaningful partnership. Therefore, aligning with the World Triathlon Corporation was ideal in that both organizations’ core values revolve around improving the health of the communities they serve and working with athletes to achieve their highest potential.

“With one of the country’s top institutes dedicated to sports medicine and human performance in the Texas Medical Center, more than two dozen sports medicine and rehabilitation locations across our service area, and an outstanding team of physicians associated with our sports medicine programs, Memorial Hermann is the leader in sports related medical services,” said Walt Lowe, M.D., medical director, Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. “We share Ironman’s interest in helping athletes achieve their highest potential and look forward to working with them to do just that.”

Registration for the event opens on Friday, June 25, at noon CDT at www.ironmantexas.com. Additional course details will be finalized in the coming weeks and will be available on the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas Web site. For athlete inquiries, please contact texas@ironman.com.
